European House Borer (EHB) is an exotic pest which has recently been discovered in some Perth suburbs.

The Borer targets untreated seasoned pine, fir and spruce. In Western Australia it has most commonly been found in dead pine trees and branches.

If the area in which you are planning to build is affected with EHB you will be advised of this by your local government authority when issuing your building licence. We recommend that in these cases you consider using treated pine in structural timbers.

A commonly used and readily available treatment is Wespine Blue. This is a pyrethrin-based treatment which comes with a 25 year guarantee. Your builder will be able to advise you about costs and any other factors which you should consider.
