Plantation Woodchips
In the future, most woodchips produced in WA for the manufacture of pulp and paper will come from the extensive hardwood plantations which have been developed over the last decade. At present, most woodchips are exported to Japan, but planning is proceeding for the construction of a pulp mill in the south west.
The plantation resource will be supplemented by some karri and marri mill residues, as well as from trees which, after felling, prove unsuitable for sawlogs.
This is a sensible use of wood which would otherwise be
burnt or wasted. However, it will only be a very small part of the total volume
of woodchips.
